Box office: 'Safe Haven,' 'Die Hard' open big, 'Beautiful Creatures' flops on Valentine's Day

Young adult novel adaptation "Beautiful Creatures" finished a disappointing fifth place, though all three newcomers are still looking ahead to the President's Day weekend battle over the next four days.

"Safe Haven" bowed with $8.8 million to "Die Hard's" $8.2 million. "Haven," the latest Nicholas Sparks romance novel adaptation to hit theaters, stars Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough. "Die Hard" is the fifth film in the action franchise starring Bruce Willis as John McClane. Both films received very poor reviews from critics.

The opening day of "Creatures" brought in $2.54 million finishing just behind $2.56 million for "Warm Bodies" -- another young adult adaptation that is entering its third week of release and has proven more attractive to audiences.

Comedy hit "Identity Thief" nabbed third place on Valentine's Day with $5.37 million.

The Rooney Mara/Channing Tatum thriller "Side Effects" and Oscar-nominated romantic comedy "Silver Linings Playbook" were the only other films to gross over $1 million on Valentine's Day.
