Box Office: 'Identity Thief' steals $36.6 million for biggest opening weekend of 2013
According to studio estimates, "Identity Thief" is on its way to a big opening weekend. The comedy, starring Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, is projected to earn $36.6 million its first weekend at the box office. That is the biggest opening weekend so far in 2013 by over $8 million.Coming in a distant second is "Warm Bodies" at $11.5 million, followed by "Side Effects" at $10 million, "Silver Linings Playbook" at $6.9 million and "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" at $5.75 million to round out the Top 5.
The rest of the Top 10 includes "Mama" ($4.3 million), "Zero Dark Thirty" ($4 million), "Argo" ($2.5 million), "Django Unchained" ($2.3 million) and "Bullet to the Head" ($1.98 million).
The only other "new" release, besides "Thief" and "Side Effects," is "Top Gun" being re-released in 3D IMAX. It is only in 300 theaters so far, but earned nearly $2 million.
