Barbie Dream House on sale for $25 million: Mattel knows she's just a doll, right?
Look, she may have been named after a real-live person, but Barbie is just a doll. And while she has certainly taken on a life of her own since her debut in 1959, it seems the folks at Mattel have lost track of the line between real and play.
Enter Barbie's Dream House. This lovely three-story pink mansion in Malibu boasts a private beach, pink granite counter tops, heated pink marble flooring, an outdoor jacuzzi tub, and never-ending ocean views thanks to the lack of a fourth wall. All of this can be yours for the low, low price of $25 million.
Yep, Barbie's Dream Home is for sale, and it actually has an MLS listing page on Trulia. After 40 years in the mansion, Mattel says Barbie -- remember, a doll, not a person -- is ready to downsize. "Barbie has got a lot of really great memories: she has had over 130 careers, she got back together with her boyfriend [Ken], she just finished her first season of a reality show," says Lori Pantel of Mattel. "She felt there was no better time to sell the Dream House and see what else is out there."
Barbie has apparently enlisted the help of Josh Altman, a luxury real estate agent known for his role on Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing." Along with the home sale, Mattel tells Forbes to expect estate sales when Barbie moves out. "So this year at retailers you may see Barbie selling her furniture," says Pantel. "You may find girls running to stores to get last pieces." (Because, remember -- we are still talking about toys.)
Mattel plans to let fans have a say on the whereabouts and features of Barbie's next digs, and they've enlisted celebrity designers such as Jonathan Adler and Trina Turk to help out with the next bachelorette pad.
The bottom line is, Mattel is discontnuing the Malibu Dream House. Kids or collectors who want to own it in real life should be prepared to shell out $170, plus the price of optional accessories -- which sounds like a much better deal than the $25 million. A new as-yet undetermined home for Barbie will be unveiled in the fall, just in time for holiday shopping.
