Texting woman falls into canal while chatting with boyfriend

Cue the chorus of people who say society has become too attached to their phones. Though, in this instance they may have a point. Laura Safe, a radio newscaster, was texting her boyfriend as she strolled through Birmingham, England. Normally that wouldn't be much of a problem, people text and walk all the time.

Unfortunately for Safe, she was so wrapped up in her conversation, she completely missed the fact that she was walking into a canal until it was too late. Luckily, the Daily Mail reports, she wasn't in the freezing water too long, as the property's manager was nearby and saw what was happening.

"I shouted to her to stop," property boss Neil Edginton says," but it was too late. I dropped my phone and ran over to her." Edginton then laid down on the ground to pull Safe from the icy water.

Safe recalls her plunge, saying, "I was there on the edge, teetering on the edge moving my arms around, trying to save myself from falling into this horrendous canal which is most probably full of, well I don't know what's in there."

She was able to joke about the dive later, tweeting, "Literally the most embarrassing/hilarious thing I've ever done!" Thankfully, the power of streaming video means the moment will live forever.
