McDonald's fish offerings to become 100% sustainable

mcdonalds-fish-sustainable.jpgMcDonald's has taken a big step towards more environmentally-friendly offerings under its worldwide golden arches. The restaurant has signed up with the Marine Stewardship Council to verify that all of its Filet-O-Fish sandwiches and coming-soon Fish McBites are going to be comprised entirely of certified sustainable Alaskan pollock.

Susan Forsell, McDonald's vice president of sustainability, says that it's an exciting step, which will not only make sure that all fish offerings are from one of the best-managed U.S. fisheries, but it's a chance for the U.S. employees to talk about McDonald's' efforts to begin sourcing its food products in a sustainable way.

The chain has already begun purchasing coffee certified by the Rainforest Alliance for its European locations and has spoken about wanting to use sustainable beef -- but there needs to be better definitions about what sustainable beef means.
