Inauguration 2013: Barack Obama and Joe Biden sworn in in private ceremony

barack-obama-inauguration-sworn-in-2013.jpgPresident Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were sworn in to their second term in office on Sunday, in brief private ceremonies.

Typically, the swearing in takes place in a grand televised event, but that is not the case when January 20 falls on a Sunday. The constitution requires that the swearing-in take place before noon on January 20, but because it is a Sunday, the celebrations and reveling will have to wait until Monday.

The New York Times reports that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. administered the President's oath in the White House Blue Room. Unlike four years ago, when Roberts fumbled the oath and it had to be repeated accurately in private, both Roberts and Obama recited the oath accurately. His wife Michelle and their daughters Sasha and Malia looked on.

Biden was sworn in at his residence at the Naval Observatory, by Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor. He was joined by his wife Jill.

After the swearing-in, Biden and Obama went to Arlington National Cemetery, where they laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Then, the Obama family went to church to worship and to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday's festivities will be far more exuberant -- parades, music, and parties are planned, as well as a 20-minute Inauguration Address from Obama.
