Tom Cruise's 'Jack Reacher' premiere delayed after Newtown shootings

tom-cruise-jack-reacher-premiere-postponed.jpgThe U.S. red-carpet premiere of Tom Cruise's latest movie "Jack Reacher" is being postponed in the wake of the mass shootings in Newtown, Conn., on Friday.

Cruise and other members of the show's cast and crew were set to appear in Pittsburgh, where the film was shot, Saturday (Dec. 15). Paramount has decided to delay the premiere, however, after Friday's tragedy, in which a gunman killed 27 people, 20 of them children at an elementary school, before killing himself.

Here is the studio's statement:

"Due to the terrible tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken, we are postponing tomorrow's Pittsburgh premiere of 'Jack Reacher.' Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones."

"Jack Reacher" is scheduled to open in theaters on Dec. 21.
