Shakira gives birth to a baby boy

Update: Shakira's rep reveals the baby news was a prank by the baby's father, Gerard Pique.

Shakira and her boyfriend, Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique, received a late Christmas present this year -- the singer gave birth to a baby boy on Thursday (Dec. 27).

Pique, a player for FC Barcelona, announced the happy news on Twitter, posting a message in Spanish that translates as "Our son has been born! We are very happy! Thanks to all for your messages."

Shakira and Pique met when the Colombian singer was shooting a video for the South Africa World Cup theme song, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)." They have been public about the relationship since March 2011. The couple announced that they were expecting a child via Facebook back in September.

"As some of you may know, Gerard and I are very happy awaiting the arrival of our first baby! At this time we have decided to give priority to this unique moment in our lives and postpone all the promotional activities planned over the next few days."

Although Shakira served as a mentor on "The Voice" this fall, her other engagements have been lessened during her pregnancy. This is the first child for both parents.
