Former President George H.W. Bush was hospitalized in November after coming down with bronchitis, and he has yet to leave the hospital. Those caring for him say he needs to "build up his energy" before he can be released.

After being hospitalized on Nov. 23, Bush's cough has lingered and doctors are trying to be "extra cautious" with his health, the Associated Press reports. Hospital officials are giving the 88-year-old physical therapy to try to increase his strength. Bush spokesman Jim McGrath says the former president could be released by Christmas, though a discharge date has not been set.

"He is definitely in great spirits," the physician treating Bush, Amy Myunderse, said after his initial hospitalization. "He is happy, joking and definitely getting better."
