Newt Gingrich calls Mitt Romney 'gifts' comment 'nuts'

Thumbnail image for newt-gingrich-cnn-getty.jpgThe GOP has tried to distance itself from a comment made by Mitt Romney claiming he lost the presidential election because Barack Obama promised costly gifts to young and minority voters.

Now Newt Gingrich has come forward to slam the remarks. CNN reports Gingrich tells ABC, "I just think it's nuts. I mean, first of all, it's insulting."

Gingrich continues, "The job of a political leader in part is to understand the people. If [Republicans] can't offer a better future that is believable to more people, we're not going to win."

Louisiana's governor, Bobby Jindal, was one of the first in the party to speak out against the comments by Romney, telling Fox, "I'm proud to have campaigned for him across the country, but I absolutely reject what he said."
