Hector "Macho" Camacho, a 50-year-old retired Puerto Rican boxer beloved by his home country, was declared brain dead today (Nov. 21) after receiving a serious gun shot wound to the face last night. He has been treated at the Rio Piedras Medical Center in San Juan following the shooting and suffered a heart attack in the early hours of the morning before ultimately becoming brain dead.

"It would be a miracle recovery, medically we can do nothing," Rafael Rodriguez Mercado, the president of the Medical Sciences Campus, tells El Nuevo Dia. Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, will decide whether or not to donate his organs.

Detectives on the case determined that Camacho and his friend Alberto Mojica were parked in front of a local shopping center when they were shot at by two gunmen who pulled up next to them in an SUV. Mojica died in the attack, but Camacho managed to survive because his jaw deflected the bullet aimed at his face and instead made its way to his spinal cord

Police chased the SUV but were unable to apprehend the shooters. Law enforcement officials are investigating what prompted the attack.

During his time in the ring, Camacho won 88 fights and lost only six.
