Christian Bale bails - Ridley Scott's "Child 44" without a star

Ridley Scott will have to go back to the drawing board to find his lead for the 1940's Soviet military murder suspense film, "Child 44." The Wrap reports Christian Bale has passed on the lead role.The script -- based on a book by Tom Rob Smith -- is being penned by Richard Price. The plot, based on a true story, centers around a Ukranian child serial killer.
Scott was initially attached to direct the film, but has turned over those duties to Daniel Espinosa.
