Two U.S. Marines were killed in the early-morning assault on Sept. 15, the prince's 28th birthday.

A Taliban spokesman told multiple media outlets that the prince -- third in line to the British throne --was the target of the on the joint U.S. and British base, which was also motivated by the amateur "Innocence of Muslims" film that mocks Islam.

"We attacked that base because Prince Harry was also on it and so they can know our anger" about the American-made video, Qari Youssef Ahmadi told the Associated Press.

The royal family has been the reluctant subject of a media frenzy in recent weeks with the publication of nude pictures of Prince Harry partying in Las Vegas and topless photos of Kate Middleton vacationing with her husband, Prince William.
