'Hotel Transylvania' leads Friday box office and could set a record
After three bad weekends in a row, things seem to be looking at the box office this time out. "Hotel Transylvania" may be on its way to a record September opening, and "Looper" is off to a solid start as well.Animated comedy "Hotel Transylvania" made an estimated $11 million in its first day of release Friday (Sept. 28). That puts it on track to challenge the best opening weekend ever for a movie released in September. The current record is held by 2002's "Sweet Home Alabama," which made $35.6 million in its first weekend.
The well-reviewed "Looper" also got off to a solid start with a $6.9 million take on Friday. That puts it in position to make more than $20 million for the weekend.

"Pitch Perfect" is only playing at 335 theaters this weekend, but it hit some high notes Friday, earning $1.75 million. That's a per-screen average of better than $5,000.
