Box office: 'The Possession' leads a meager Friday
Labor Day weekend is typically not a very strong one at the box office, and this one is shaping up to be no different -- unless it's worse than recent years.Horror movie "The Possession" topped the charts on Friday (Aug. 31), but it only made $6.1 million, according to studio estimates. That puts it on pace for about a $15 million haul for the three-day weekend.
No other movie made more than $3 million Friday. "Lawless," which opened Wednesday, came in second with $2.75 million. Last week's leader, "The Expendables 2," fell to third with about $2.2 million, bringing its total take to a little under $60 million.
"The Bourne Legacy" ($1.8 million) and "ParaNorman" ($1.4 million) round out Friday's Top 5.
Way down the list is the curious case of "The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure." The kid-targeted movie from the marketer who brought "The Teletubbies" to America is on track to be one of the lowest-grossing wide releases ever.
It opened Wednesday and has made less than $350,000 so far, despite playing on more than 2,100 screens. Its per-screen average is hovering around $100 -- meaning no more than a handful of people are watching any single showing.
