Jeremy Renner's 'The Bourne Legacy' leads at box office

With Jeremy Renner stepping into the shoes vacated by Matt Damon, "The Bourne Legacy" opened to a solid $14 million box office take on Friday (Aug. 10), putting it in line for a $40 million opening weekend.

The reboot of the popular Universal franchise is an important tentpole for not only the studio but Renner's stock as a leading man. Original projections had the film targeting a $45 million haul for the weekend.

On a weekend when the actual presidential campaign jumped into overdrive, the Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis election vehicle, "The Campaign," earned $10.3 million on Friday. That second-place total was higher than most analysts' original predictions and puts it in line for a final voter turnout of close to $30 million for the weekend.

Dropping to No. 3 after three straight No. 1 finishes was "The Dark Knight Rises," with a Friday total of $5.6 million.

For more adult fare, "Hope Springs," starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell, earned a respectable $4.7 million to finish in fourth place, after opening on Wednesday. The adult-relationship dramedy from director David Frankel should finish with a five-day total around $18 million.
