Andy Murray avenges Roger Federer's Wimbledon victory at 2012 Summer Olympics

British tennis player Andy Murray gave the hometown crowd quite a show Sunday (Aug. 5) when he defeated tennis great Roger Federer of Switzerland to take the 2012 Summer Olympics gold medal.

The two played for in the Wimbledon finals four weeks ago to the day and that time Federer defeated Murray rather handily in front of Murray's countrymen for his record-tying seventh Wimbledon title. But not this time.

Murray won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4, and had the crowd whipped into a frenzy by the time his gold medal point came on an ace. He and Federer quickly embraced at center court and Federer exited the arena.

Perhaps Federer just didn't have any gas left in the tank. His semifinal match-up against Juan Martin del Potro lasted an Olympic record-setting 4 hours, 26 minutes, twice as long as Murray's semifinal against Novak Djokovic (though the length of the semifinal didn't keep del Potro from winning bronze against Djokovic).

This is Murray's first major tournament win. He has reached the finals in each of the Grand Slam events, but has never won a major until now. Federer has never actually won an Olympic gold medal in men's singles, only a gold in men's doubles in 2008.
