Olympics swimming trials: Dara Torres and Katie Ledecky span the ages

dara-torres-olympic-trials.jpgThe 2012 women's Olympics swimming trials had quite the gamut of ages at Sunday's (July 1) set of finals and semifinals. Katie Ledecky won the 800m Freestyle to earn her first Olympics bid - she is just 15 years old.

Meanwhile, 45-year-old Dara Torres (above) got a step closer to her sixth Olympics. She placed third overall in the 50m Freestyle semifinals, which qualifies her for Monday night's finals. In order to go to her sixth Olympics (which no one has ever done), she would need to finish first or second in the finals.

Part of what spurs on Torres' bid is that at the 2008 Olympics, when she was then 41 and became the oldest Olympic swimmer in history, she was out-touched by one one-hundredth of a second for the 50m Free Olympic gold medal. Torres has won Olympic gold medals, but never in an individual event.
