Gymnastics Olympic trials: Nastia Liukin's comeback bid is over

nastia-liukin-bars-olympic-trials.jpgNastia Liukin's comeback bid to return to the Summer Olympics in London is over. She has not completed a full bar routine without falling since before the Visa Championships three weeks ago. She didn't complete either routine at Visa, then Friday night (June 29) at the Olympic trials, she bent her knees on a handstand and fell on her dismount.

Now Sunday night (July 1) at the final day of gymnastics trials Liukin had her last chance - she also competes on balance beam, but the U.S. is pretty deep on beam. If she was going to make it to London, she had to do it on uneven bars, where the U.S. is much weaker. But she fell on a release move and landed flat on her face, to a huge gasp from the crowd.

Liukin looked like she wanted to cry, but she got back up, put chalk on her hands and completed her routine, to the roar of the crowd. However, the 2012 Olympic hopes are over for the reigning women's all-around gold medalist.
