'Gangster Squad' trailer pulled after 'Dark Knight Rises' shooting

gangster-squad.jpgWarner Bros. has pulled a trailer for its movie "Gangster Squad" -- which includes a scene of mobsters shooting up a movie theater -- from theaters in the wake of the mass shooting at a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo.

The trailer, which has been online since May, was scheduled to start running in theaters this weekend, although not necessarily paired with "The Dark Knight Rises." According to multiple reports, it did not play in the Aurora theater where James Holmes is accused of killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more.

"Gangster Squad" stars Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Josh Brolin in a story about a secret LAPD squad assigned to wipe out organized crime in Los Angeles in the 1940s. The trailer (you can watch it here) contains a scene where four men with machine guns open fire from behind the screen at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, which echoes the real-life situation a little too closely.

It's unclear if the studio will re-edit the trailer to remove the scene. The movie is scheduled to open Sept. 7.
