Tom Cruise 'deeply saddened' by Katie Holmes divorce filing

Tom Cruise is going on record to let the world know that it's Katie Holmes who initiated the couple's split after five years of marriage.

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," reads a statement from Cruise's rep to People magazine. "Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

Cruise and Holmes wed in November 2006 after a whirlwind romance and the birth of their daughter Suri, now 6. On Thursday (June 28), Holmes filed for divorce in New York citing irreconcilable differences and asking for sole legal and physical custody of Suri.

A statement from Holmes' lawyer was terse, saying the divorce is a private matter and adding, "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Cruise celebrates his 50th birthday on Monday (July 2).
