Box Office: Family fare triumps with 'Brave' and 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted'

brave-pixar-marina.jpgThough a few critics have called "Brave" Pixar's worst film yet, Pixar is laughing all the way to the bank. In its opening weekend, "Brave" easily took the No. 1 spot at the box office, raking in an estimated $66.7 million thanks to strong sales... and that extra-high 3-D ticket price tag.

It was a great summer weekend for kids and their parents to hit the theaters, as evidenced by the fact that "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" landed in second place, making $20 million in its third weekend in theaters.

Meanwhile, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" underperformed, only taking in $16.5 million in its debut weekend when the studio had hoped for $20 million. The lack of interest in the 3-D historical horror flick doesn't bode well for the upcoming "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," expected in theaters in 2013.
