'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' moved to spring 2013, will convert to 3-D

Paramount has made an 11th-hour call to push back the release of its action movie "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." It had been scheduled to open on June 29, but the studio says it will now be released on March 29, 2013. The reason, Deadline reports, is that Paramount wants to do a 3-D conversion in order to goose the movie's foreign box office.

(Frankly, we're kind of surprised the movie wasn't already in 3-D. But apparently it's not.)

"G.I. Joe" would have had the action market pretty much to itself on June 29; the other wide releases that day are Steven Soderbergh's male-stripper movie "Magic Mike" and "Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection." But the 3-D market outside the United States is growing rapidly, and Paramount wants to take advantage of it.

With "G.I. Joe" vacating the weekend, Deadline also reports that Universal has moved its comedy "Ted" to June 29 from July 13.
