'Fifty Shades of Grey': Stephenie Meyer weighs in on 'Twilight' fan fiction turned best-seller

It's well-known, now, that the latest pop culture phenomenon -- the "Fifty Shades of Grey" erotica trilogy -- originally began as "Twilight" fan fiction, with Edward and Bella in the leading roles. Now it's flying off the shelves (and, let's be real, off of Amazon.com because many of us don't actually want to buy it in public) and has landed author E.L. James a $5 million movie deal.

So how does "Twilight" scribe Stephenie Meyer feel about being the inspiration for the erotic books? She doesn't feel much at all.

"I haven't read it. I mean, that's really not my genre, not my thing," she tells MTV, laughing it off. "I've heard about it; I haven't really gotten into it that much. Good on her -- she's doing well. That's great!"

When it's suggested that "Fifty Shades" wouldn't exist without Meyer's source material, though, Meyer gives James some credit where credit is due. "It might not exist in the exact form that it's in," Meyer says. "Obviously, [James] had a story in her, and so it would've come out in some other way."

The circle of life continues, by the way. Now, "Fifty Shades of Grey" has spawned its own fan fiction.

So basically, as a society, we are doomed.
