Doc Watson in critical condition after fall and surgery
Folk guitarist Doc Watson is in critical condition at a North Carolina hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a blockage in his colon. Watson, 89, was rushed to the hospital after falling in his Deep Gap, N.C., home on Monday (May 21). Doctors at a local hospital determined he needed surgery and transferred him to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, where he is -- according to USA Today -- responsive and recovering.
The blind guitarist is known as the master of the flatpicking style of playing. He's won several Grammys, including a lifetime achievement award and the National Medal of the Arts. He also founded Merlefest, a music festival named after his son, who was killed in a 1995 tractor accident.
