Box office: 'The Avengers' reaches $1 billion worldwide

Sorry "Dark Shadows" -- it just wasn't your weekend, or your year. Despite an all-star cast led by Johnny Depp, the Tim Burton-directed vampire redux was just too anemic to muscle out "The Avengers," which -- 19 days after its release -- crossed the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office returns.

According to a Disney press release, the superhero mash-up raked in $103.2 million domestically in its second week of release and another $95.4 million in overseas ticket sales, making it the fifth Disney film to cross the $1 billion threshold. The others:  "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the Burton-directed/Depp-starring "Alice in Wonderland," "Toy Story 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

"Dark Shadows" snagged just $28.8 million on its debut weekend, according to The Wrap. "Think Like a Man" came in a distant third with $6.3 million.
