Willie Nelson monument: Austin statue unveiled at 4:20 on 4/20
Legendary musician Willie Nelson, who also happens to be an outspoken advocate of marijuana legalization, was honored on Friday (April 20) in Austin, Tex., with the unveiling of a new statue in his honor. Coincidence likely played no part in the fact that the statue was unveiled at precisely 4:20 p.m. on 4/20 -- the internationally (if informally) recognized National Weed Day.Nelson was on hand at Austin's Moody Theater where the 8-foot statue of him standing and holding his guitar at his side was installed. Philadelphia sculptor Clete Shields tells the AP that the stance and scale are meant to communicate both Nelson's "whimsical" side and his influence on music.
"We wanted to get a timeless Willie, an ageless Willie," Shields says.
One organizer of the event says the date was chosen not because of its marijuana connection, but because Nelson was due in town to perform a tribute to Johnny Cash the same night.
