'Lone Ranger': Johnny Depp's Tonto looks like Captain Jack Sparrow

In "The Lone Ranger," Johnny Depp will appear with a crow perched atop his head, but his Tonto bears a striking resemblance to another bird-related Depp character: Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

In an interview with EW, Depp says he took the inspiration for his portrayal of Tonto from the Kirby Sattler painting "I am Crow" (below), which depicts a Native American chief wearing a crow-feather adorned headdress and white face paint with black vertical lines through each eye.

"I'd actually seen a painting by an artist named Kirby Sattler, and looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That's it... The stripes down the face and across the eyes ... it seemed to me like you could almost see the separate sections of the individual."

He continues: "It just so happened Sattler had painted a bird flying directly behind the warrior's head. It looked to me like it was sitting on top... I thought: Tonto's got a bird on his head. It's his spirit guide in a way. It's dead to others, but it's not dead to him. It's very much alive."

Still, we think Tonto could be Jack Sparrow's brother or, at least, half brother. Both characters sport long, beaded hair, jewelry, head scarfs and -- of course -- Johnny Depp's always recognizable face. And, not for nothing, "The Lone Ranger" is directed by original "Pirates of the Caribbean" filmmaker Gore Verbinski.
