'The Scream,' Edvard Munch's masterpiece could sell for $80 million
One of the most iconic pieces of 19th century art, Edvard Munch's "The Scream," will hit the auction block in May and, reports the New York Times, it could bring up to $80 million when sold. The image is kind of a go-to in pop culture and has been used on everything from t-shirts to campaign posters (or, as the Times notes, anti-George Bush campaign buttons), mouse pads and countless posters.
Munch made four versions of the painting in addition to creating a printed wood block version. The one up for sale -- the most colorful rendering -- is being sold by a Norwegian businessman whose father once lived next to Munch.
"I have lived with this painting my entire life," Petter Olsen tells the Times. He's hoping to use the proceeds from the sale to build a cultural center on land where Munch once lived near Oslo.
