Gary Carter, baseball Hall of Fame catcher, dies at 57

Baseball Hall of Famer Gary Carter, who had been fighting brain tumors for much of the past year, has died.

The former Montreal Expos and New York Mets star, 57, died Thursday (Feb. 16), his family says.

"I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 p.m. [ET]," daughter Kimmy Bloemers wrote on the family's website, according to ESPN. "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know. He is in heaven and has reunited with his mom and dad."

Carter was diagnosed with brain tumors last May. He underwent aggressive treatment that seemed to help, but doctors found new tumors on his brain last month.

Carter played 19 seasons in the major leagues and was an 11-time All-Star. He helped the Mets win the 1986 World Series and finished his career in 1992 with a .262 batting average, 324 home runs and 1,225 runs batted in. He was voted into the Hall of Fame in 2003.
