Elizabeth Smart, Matthew Gilmour marry in Hawaii

elizabeth-smart-matthew-gilmour (2).jpgElizabeth Smart, the former Utah kidnapping victim, has kind of eloped! She and boyfriend of a year, Matthew Gilmour, were married Saturday, Feb. 18 in a small ceremony on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, reports E! Online.

The two were married at the Laie Hawaii Temple of the Mormon church with a small gathering of family members in attendance. Originally, Smart and Gilmour had planned a large summer wedding, but they decided to get married away from all the media attention instead.

"Elizabeth's desire was for what most women want--to celebrate her nuptials in a private wedding with family and close friends. After the story broke about her engagement and the media became increasingly invasive, Elizabeth recognized it was going to be impossible to have a traditional wedding devoid of distractions and unusual challenges outside of her control. She decided, about a week ago, the best way to avoid significant distraction was to change her wedding plans and to get married in an unscheduled ceremony outside of Utah," Smart's rep tells E! News.

If you'll recall, Smart was kidnapped in 2002 at the age of 14 by Brian David Mitchell. She was found nine months later.

Congratulations to Elizabeth and Matthew!
