Daytona 500 rain delay: NASCAR drivers Danica Patrick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon to race on Monday
For the first time in history, NASCAR's Daytona 500 race has been postponed thanks to some inconveniently timed rain.According to Fox Sports, the race was supposed to around 1 p.m. ET on Sunday (Feb. 26), but was delayed when a rain shower began. The 2.5-mile track was dried with jet driers after the rain stopped falling, but when once the track was suitable for racing again it started raining once more (just after 5 p.m. ET).
Because it takes two hours to dry the Daytona track and the rain was expected to continue until at least 8 p.m., Fox reports the Daytona 500 will now begin at noon on Monday, Feb. 27.
Danica Patrick is racing in her first Daytona 500, alongside fellow NASCAR drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon. Patrick was involved in a scary crash on Feb. 23, but a day later won the Nationwide pole position, becoming only the second woman in NASCAR history to do so.
