Hundreds of wedding dresses destroyed rather than donated
Local merchants were shocked when Priscilla of Boston closed its doors for the last time this past weekend. Not because the Edina, Minn. bridal shop went out of business, but because of what it did with their unsold merchandise.
Instead of donating the leftover wedding dresses, shoes, veils and various other accessories to a worthy nuptial cause, employees took them out back, spray-painted them in neon and tossed them in a dumpster.
Owned by David's Bridal, a spokesperson says, "Priscilla of Boston has always donated quality bridal gowns to a variety of charitable causes. We do not, however, donate unsaleable dresses that are damaged, soiled or in otherwise poor condition."
Outraged bystanders who pulled dresses from the dumpsters to try and salvage them say that the gowns were in completely wearable condition. Much of the other merchandise that had been thrown out was also new, still packed in unopened boxes.
"It hurt me physically to see that," says Kari McMurrough, a nearby salon owner who snagged several of the damaged gowns. "It was sad."
On the bright side, this year's Edina brides might start a new funky, graffiti-inspired trend.
