David Letterman booker fired after saying female comics 'act like men' to get laughs

letterman-cbs.jpgThe New York Post is reporting that Eddie Brill, a comedy booker for "The Late Show with David Letterman," has been fired after giving a New York Times interview in which he says too many female comics "will act like men" to get laughs.

His full quote in the piece is, "There are a lot less female comics who are authentic. I see a lot of female comics who, to please an audience, will act like men."

It's just one quote out of a lengthy interview, in which he also says that Andy Kaufman was funny, just "not in a stand-up scenario," that Bob Hope was a funny comedy actor, but Brill never "thought Bob Hope was a great stand-up comedian" and that comedy is universal, citing, "Mark Twain was as brilliant as Ricky Gervais."

The Post reports that Brill will continue to warm up the audience prior to "Letterman" tapings, but will no longer be in charge of booking comedians, a job he has held for 10 years. It will instead be done by a small group of producers.

Several female stand-ups have leapt to Brill's defense, notably Lisa Lampanelli and Bonnie McFarlane.

"It's funny how you can get fired for an opinion," says Lampanelli. "I think a lot of women are friggin' babies."

Do you take offense to the "act like men" comment, Zap2it readers? Perhaps his way of thinking is misguided - women aren't "acting" like men, they're just acting like assertive, outgoing women?

At least he didn't say women aren't funny at all - because Judd Apatow has two words for that sentiment.
