Box office: 'Underworld: Awakening' beats out 'Red Tails' to win Friday
The latest "Underworld" release, "Underword: Awakening," proves that just because a film is the fourth in an ongoing action series doesn't mean it'll lose steam at the box office. The Kate Beckinsale-starring film managed to earn $9.4 million dollars in its first day of release, winning the Friday box office by a mile, according to Box Office Mojo. Coming in second with a respectable $6.0 million was "Red Tails," about the African-American World War II pilots known as the Tuskeegee Airmen.
Last weekend's box office victor, the Mark Wahlberg-starring "Contraband," pulled in $3.7 million for third place, followed by the wide release of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" with $3.2 million, "Haywire" with $2.9 million and "Beauty and the Beast 3D" with $2.1 million.
Rounding out the top 10 were "Joyful Noise" in seventh place with $1.7 million, "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" in eighth with $1.5 million, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" in ninth with $1.3 million, and Meryl Streep's "The Iron Lady" in tenth with $1.1 million.
