Box office: 'The Grey' stuns with $20 million

the-grey.jpgThe movie world was stunned with the news that "The Grey" starring Liam Neeson is projected to win the weekend with $20 million. The film has been well-reviewed, but not overwhelmingly so. It was originally projected to take $17.6. The second place spot was taken by "Underworld: Awakening," which didn't even come close, grabbing 12.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

The Katherine Heigl film "One for the Money" took the third place spot with $11.8 million, though the take for that and the fifth place film "Man on a Ledge" ($8.3 million) come with a caveat, according to Deadline. Both films had opening weekend deals with Groupon and Living Social. Between them in the fourth place spot was the George Lucas passion project, "Red Tails."

In the sixth and seventh spots were two Oscar-nominated films. "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" took in $7.1 million and "The Descendants," $6.6. "Contraband" followed in 8th place with $6.5 and ninth and tenth belonged to "Beauty and the Beast" in 3-D with $5.3 million and "Haywire" with $4 million.
