Box Office: 'Contraband' starts holiday weekend with a win
"Contraband" may not have done an incredible amount of business on Friday (Jan. 13), but it did make more money than anything else screening at the nation's theaters -- $8.7 million according to estimates from Box Office Mojo -- so we'll go ahead and call a win for the Mark Wahlberg-fronted action flick. "Beauty and the Beast 3D" -- Disney's latest re-work of a classic -- pulled in $5.6 million in ticket sales, topping the weekend's other debut: "Joyful Noise" -- you know, the one that pairs up Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah in a 117 minute song-fest.
"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" ($3.3 million) and "The Devil Inside" ($2.7 milion) rounded out the top five in what was a slow start to a long holiday weekend.
