Box Office: 'Contraband' pays off for Mark Wahlberg
Despite a big football weekend, Mark Wahlberg's "Contraband," pulled in solid numbers to top a busy MLK holiday weekend box office, according to Box Office Mojo. The action flick pulled in $24 million in ticket sales, trouncing Disney's "Beauty and the Beast 3D" re-release -- which did good business itself at $18.5 million for the weekend. The other new release -- "Joyful Noise" -- came in fourth with $11.3 million and was just edged out of the no. 3 spot by Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" ($11.5 million).
The Meryl Streep award-bait movie "The Iron Lady," in which the great actress plays the great former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, broke into the top 10. Streep will compete for best actress honors at Sunday's (Jan. 15) Golden Globes for her portrayal.
"The Devil Inside" remained in the top 10 at no. 6, but ticket sales dropped steeply from its opening weekend; the film made just $7.9 million compared to the previous weekend's $33 million.
