'Beyonce' is the 'all-time diva of flies'

beyonce-fly.jpgThis just in from the science desk. A previously unnamed species of horse fly has now been given a moniker in honor of Beyonce, because said insect is "the all-time diva of flies," researchers tell Live Science.

Bryan Lessard, a researcher from Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Australia, is responsible for the fly's official name - Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.

"It was the unique dense golden hairs on the fly's abdomen that led me to name this fly in honor of the performer Beyoncé as well as giving me the chance to demonstrate the fun side of taxonomy - the naming of species," says Lessard, in a statement.

Beyonce is nowhere near the first celebrity to have an insect named after her. Others include Jerry Garcia and the wood roach (Cryptocercus garciai), Greta Garbo and a wasp (Rostropria garbo) and Harrison Ford, who has two - a spider (Calponia harrisonfordi) and an ant (Pheidole harrisonfordi).
