Ancient popcorn discovered in Peru

We think we're so modern with our smartphones and popped corn, but guess what? Ancient people who lived in what is now Peru were chomping on popped corn up to 6,700 years ago, according to National Geographic.

The discovery was made during an analysis of corn cobs, husks, tassels and stalks recently unearthed at two archeological digs in Peru. The treat likely would've been prepared by wrapping a cob in some kind of material (aka a pre-historic Jiffy Pop) and resting it on hot coals.

Coincidentally, the discover came either right before or right after National Popcorn Day. According to the Popcorn Board, the celebration is either Jan. 19 or Super Bowl day. In 2012, the Super Bowl will be played on Sunday, Feb. 5.
