Jennifer Hudson says visiting fiance saved her life

zap-photo-jennifer-hudson-red-carpet-420.jpgJennifer Hudson is beginning to open up about the family tragedy she experienced in 2008 when her mother, brother and nephew were murdered by her sister's estranged husband.

Hudson recently revealed to Ebony magazine that she was supposed to be in the home too, but decided to visit her fiance, David Otunga, instead.

"He wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago. I flew out to see him; that's why I'm still here," Hudson tells the magazine (via E! Online). "That's one of the things that saved my life. Because I could have been home with my mum then."

Hudson hasn't spoken much publicly about the devastating event, and seemed shocked that she even admitted that tidbit. "I've never said that before, and I can't believe I just said that now," she says. "But I didn't know."

Hudson spoke for the first time about the murders on "Oprah" in February, saying,
"It's such a shocking thing and it's a lot to take in. It's like, 'Okay, is this real? Did this really happen? It's hard to put it in sync with reality."

She says she tries to live her life the way her mother and brother would want her to.. "My mother would be saying to me, 'Stop crying, why are you always crying?' or my brother telling me 'Jenny knock it off you gotta keep going,'" she tearfully remembers. "The only thing I can do to honor them is to make them proud."
