Box Office: 'Muppets' opens solid, but 'Breaking Dawn' stays on top
"The Muppets" had a strong first weekend box office earning, taking in a solid $42 million. But it wasn't enough to wrest the box office crown from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1," which was tops at the box office for the second weekend in a row, earning $62 million."Breaking Dawn" is now approaching a total of $225 million domestically and $400 million total worldwide.
More family fare rounds out the box office Top 5. "Happy Feet 2" earned $18.5 million over the five-day holiday weekend, good for third place. It was followed by "Arthur Christmas" at no. 4 with $17 million and "Hugo" at $15.3 million.
The overall box office was down 12% compared to Thanksgiving weekend last year, though last year's Turkey Day weekend did have "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1."
