Lettuce recall over positive listeria test at True Leaf Farms goes out to 19 states

true-leaf-farms-lettuce-recall.jpgTrue Leaf Farms of Salina, Calif. had concerns over a listeria contamination and has issued a voluntary lettuce recall, reports the AP. The initial recall was of 90 cartons of romaine lettuce that were only shipped to Washington and Idaho, but now the chief executive of Church Brothers, the company that markets and sells the farm's produce, has said the recall involved nearly 2,500 cartons across 19 states plus Canada.

The states involved in the recall include Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Vermont.

The company recalled the almost 33,000 pounds of lettuce after one bag tested positive for listeria. Listeria is the bacteria recently found in cantaloupe in Colorado that was responsible for 72 illnesses and 16 deaths across 18 states.

The bacteria causes listeriosis, which most commonly manifests itself in humans in the form of meningitis and sepsis - both of which are serious infections.
