Can Anonymous shut down NYSE.com? Does it even matter?

The Occupy Wall Street movement is getting some help -- whether organizers want it or not -- from the shadowy group of Internet hackers known as Anonymous. The group issued a new call to arms (or keyboards), via YouTube, asking protesters to join in a coordinated attack on NYSE.com, the New York Stock Exchange's official website.

The group (or portions of it, the video includes a message stating "Even though the majority does not want the operation to happen, factions of Anonymous are going for the attack) wants interested parties to participate in a "distributed denial of service attack" -- directing a flood of traffic at a website until it crashes -- on Monday (Oct. 10) at 3:30 p.m. ET.

According to the Associated Press, the attack would have no effect whatsoever on the actual trading systems, which are run through a completely different data center.

Anonymous's previous targets have included Mastercard.com and Visa.com.
