Rosie O'Donnell talks coming out and her 'humiliating' divorce, wears fishnet stockings
Rosie O'Donnell is returning to television with her new show on OWN, so of course, for her first big interview promoting the show, she's on the current cover of O Magazine with Oprah Winfrey. In a candid interview, O'Donnell opens up about her divorce from wife Kelli Carpenter. She says that she and Carpenter were just too different in the end. "She wanted to play tennis at the country club, and I don't do country clubs," O'Donnell says. "I tried. They made an exception for a gay family, and we joined. It was a big thing: 'They let in a gay family - whoo!' So I show up to play with her, and somebody comes out and says, 'You can't play unless you have tennis whites.'"
Though the divorce was right for her family, O'Donnell says it was still "Humbling. And humiliating ... In the O'Donnell family, no one had ever been divorced."
O'Donnell, who says that before she publicly came out, the only people in her life who didn't know she was gay was the audience of her former show, is thrilled about moving to Chicago to do her new show, which she says is "a new beginning for me. For the first time in a long time, I'm excited."
As for her controversial time on "The View" and her feud with Donald Trump, O'Donnell says a chemical imbalance fueled her anger. "You know, I think I had a lot more rage than I was aware of," she says. "I had, like, zero estrogen," she says. "And since I got some, I've been able to function more normally. I've stopped being so angry."
We remain distracted by her fishnets and gold sneakers on the cover.
