'Lion King: 3D' bests box office expectations, on track for nearly $30 million weekend
Disney will probably go through a few rounds of the "Hakuna Matata" chorus today.
After topping box office predictions with an early lead on Friday, the limited re-release of "The Lion King: 3D" is now on track to earn $29.3 million in its opening weekend.
The 1994 animated classic, with the addition of an extra dimension, brought in double the returns its closest competition, "Contagion." Last weekend's victor brings in a total of $14.5 million.
As for new new entries, Ryan Gosling's "Drive" pulled in $11 million in its first week, with the remake of "Straw Dogs" and Sarah Jessica Parker vehicle "I Don't Know How She Does It" fairing much worse, coming in at just $5 million and $4.5 million, respectively.
"The Help," another Disney offering, maintains a strong presence, coming in at #4 and adding $6.4 million to its now $146 million haul.
