Heidi the cross-eyed opossum dies

People are generally grossed out by opossums. However, if they are adorably cross-eyed, then they are embraced the world over.

Internet sensation and resident of Germany's Leipzig Zoo Heidi the cross-eyed opossum has died today (Sept. 29). Officials at the zoo note that the beloved marsupial had been deteriorating for several weeks; unable to move on her own, zoo officials made the decision to put down the 3-year-old opossum.

Heidi attracted national attention after she was highlighted in a German television report; she quickly gained more than 332,000 fans on Facebook. The height of Heidi's fame came when she correctly picked the best actress and best actor winners of the 2011 Oscars.
