Gabrielle Giffords joins Diane Sawyer for 'sit down' interview, on-camera remains a question

U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords has kept a low profile since ending her four-month hospital stay following January's tragic shooting in Tuscon, Arizona.

But now, in anticipation of the Nov. 15 release of her new memoir ("Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope") with astronaut husband Mark Kelly, Giffords has booked her first real interview.

ABC News confirms that anchor Diane Sawyer will conduct a "sit down" interview with Ms. Giffords, scheduled to air as part of a one-hour special on Nov 14.

What remains unclear is whether or not the interview will be shown to television audiences.

Giffords' spokesman Mark Kimble attempted to clarify in a statement to the Tuscon Sentinel.

"Congresswoman Giffords has not decided if she's going to conduct an on-camera interview," says Kimble, confirming an off-camera interview but saying a decision about an on-camera discussion will come "at some point, based on her progress."

Since leaving in-patient rehabilitation in June, Giffords' two notable public forays have included the release of two photographs on her Facebook page and a visit to the House floor to vote in favor of raising the debt limit ceiling.
