First Lady Michelle Obama plays doubles with Serena Williams at 2011 U.S. Open
First Lady Michelle Obama took to the U.S. Open over the weekend to show off her mad tennis skills. The AP reports she played doubles against Serena Williams, with each woman partnering a child on a smaller court, she clocked a 55-mph serve and she did some hula-hooping. Fun!"I'm not really good or anything like that. That's the beauty of tennis. You don't have to be good to enjoy it. I love the game, and my skills are very questionable," says the First Lady.
The doubles match started off against tennis great John McEnroe, then Serena later took over as the opponent. One of the First Lady's primary platforms has been her "Let's Move!" initiative to combat childhood obesity. Tennis certainly gets you moving.
Later, Michelle watched the men's quarterfinal match, joined by players Billie Jean King, James Blake and Katrina Adams. Obama had great things to say about the U.S. Tennis Association's building of kid-sized courts all around the country, as she didn't get into tennis until after law school because the South Side of Chicago where she grew up had very few courts.
"It's a sport you can do forever," says Obama.
