Erykah Badu wants to be a midwife

Singer and sometimes actress Erykah Badu has found a new calling: She wants to be certified in midwifery and deliver babies.

In her spare time Badu, according to People (via the Toronto Sun), became a birth doula (a kind of labor and birth coach) and helped to deliver some babies for close friends.

"I've always had a mothering nature," Badu tells People. "But I didn't plan on becoming a doula. I just wanted to care for my family and friends."

Now, says Badu, she knows what she is "supposed to do with my life."

She's also a spokesperson for the International Center for Traditional Childbearing and hopes to open birthing centers of her own in the future.
